Hi! Thanks you very much for your appreciation of these page edits :-) , but curiosity got the better of me. Why? What is so special about this page and its file? To me it's a very ordinary photo of an ordinary event. Sure, it's been used on a few websites, but some of my other photos are used on hundreds of sites, so I really can't see what the big deal is with this one. ;-) Sorry for being inquisitive, but it's not often I get these kind of 'thanks'. All the best, --Cart(talk)15:45, 16 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
I speculate it's mainly because of 3 reasons: 1. it looks good with just a few lit windows and otherwise dark but still discernible scenery 2. there are only few files available under a free license for the event and even fewer that are of good quality and illustrative 3. I don't know how you search file uses of files on Commons but it may be that the way you search them or come across them this is a file / file-use you'd find.
I think there are many uses of files on Commons that are not acknowledged on the given talk page. It probably needs some new tool that does some automatic checking to capture more and a sizable fraction. Prototyperspective (talk) 15:50, 16 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for satisfying my curiosity. :-) I was mainly taken aback that someone paid attention to such a photo. I do occasional searches online to see where my photos are used. Sometimes I search using "W.carter" and sometimes my real name, but the best way to find where an image is used, is to download a small version of the file and to an Image search with Google Lens, and check the "Exact matches". --Cart(talk)16:20, 16 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
We released the "Add a Link" Structured Task to 100% of accounts at English Wikipedia on Tuesday, September 2nd (before then it was available to 20% of accounts).
After examining if the Growth features and Mentorship could be adapted to Wikidata, we activated the Growth features on Beta Wikidata to allow for testing and discussion (T400937).
Although some features, like Suggested Edits, are Wikipedia-specific, the Growth team designed most features to be more wiki-agnostic.
The machine learning team has been working on a new model that can suggest links to more languages, including Urdu, Chinese, and Japanese Wikipedias. We are starting to release the “Add a Link” feature to Wikipedias that weren’t supported by the previous model.
The Growth team is involved in several research initiatives to help guide our future work:
Progression System – We have published initial findings from interviews with 10 English and French Wikipedia newcomers.
The research examined motivations, challenges, and feedback on a prototype system intended to help editors build confidence, develop skills, and contribute more constructively over time.
Mobile Web Editing Research – This project combines quantitative and qualitative data, community feedback, and user journey analysis to identify possible ways to enhance the mobile editing experience.
Newcomers Survey – This project surveys successful newcomers on English Wikipedia to understand their early editing experiences, tool use, and community interactions.
The Growth team participated in several community events to listen, share, and collaborate on improving newcomer experiences across Wikimedia projects.
This session invited organizers to share how they introduce newcomers to Growth features and the challenges they encounter. The discussion focused on common newcomer questions and opportunities to strengthen collaboration in supporting new editors.
This talk demonstrated how Structured Tasks help newcomers take their first successful steps on Wikipedia. It shared impact data, community configurations, and a demo of “Add a Link,” illustrating how these tasks make editing more accessible and sustainable, particularly for mobile contributors.
With active editor numbers declining, the Contributors Strategy aims to create a clearer, more engaging path for participation. This session, led by the WMF Contributors group with involvement from the Editing, Growth, Moderator Tools, and Connection (formerly Campaigns) teams, highlighted efforts to streamline contributor experiences, offer structured and mobile-friendly workflows, and foster meaningful engagement. Participants learned about ongoing initiatives and shared feedback to help shape a more inclusive and sustainable future for Wikimedia contributors.
Many communities face a decline in volunteer engagement. Newcomers often leave soon after joining, while experienced editors struggle to manage increasingly complex workflows and overwhelming backlogs. We presented the Contributors Strategy and the different features and workflows that can help communities to address these challenges. We listened to the specific needs of the CEE communities to help guide the Contributors teams' work.

Before you judge me, I ask you to familiarize yourself with the facts. The category currently works as follows: “Road – Road transport – Road transport infrastructure.” This means that all categories are already logically connected.
However, if I now say that “Road transport infrastructure” should become a parent category of “Road” (which doesn’t make much sense conceptually), the following loop — and thus an incorrect categorization — would occur:
Road – road transport – road transport infrastructure – road – road transport – road transport infrastructure – road...
I didn't judge you so please don't claim such a false thing. Thanks for your explanation, it would be much better to include this / explain this in the edit summary. I was checking the categories on that category and both Thoroughfares and Linear structures or cats above them are not in the Road transport infrastructure cat.
Before you judge me is a friendly expression with the preventive intention of not passing judgment on me and was not referring to your edit summary — although I didn’t find that particularly friendly either. But I think we can both put that behind us now.
As for why I didn’t include this in the edit summary: well, explaining what I was able to elaborate on here in more detail would have been far too long to fit there.
Regarding your proposed solution: I think it sounds good. But feel free to get a second opinion from others. I’m not an expert in this field — my concern was solely about the formal error. Lukas Beck (talk) 18:34, 23 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
It read like an accusation so I misread it. It wasn't meant to be unfriendly, sorry. For future edits: I think an edit summary like "introduces a category-cycle" would suffice. I would make the edits in a few days and until then you could create or invite/ping other users asking about this if you wish so and users could also chime in after the edits if they think this organization is flawed anyhow. Prototyperspective, there are so many artworks, animations and several graphics in videos created by the record-label which cannot be extracted. I insist the video files should not be deleted after converting them to audio. What do you say? --Gpkp (talk) 14:35, 2 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
1. They can be extracted. 2. A file in video format that is a static image or basically a static image and audio is the wrong format choice as static images can be embedded in the audio file and/or a separate image be included in the file description. 3. They have not yet been extracted and there is no deletion request yet for the videos so it doesn't need to be discussed now. Prototyperspective (talk) 14:39, 2 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! Yes, it's on my list of things to do as fast possible. However, there are three technical issues here which complicates all of this so it's not as quick and simple to get this truly done:
the bot apparently does not move or not always move files from category moves without redirect so I also have to check my other moves of that type and ask for the bot to be changed and/or checking whether contents of other categories moved that way by other users have been moved
a way to move multiple categories at once seems missing (thread)
a way to edit the contents of multiple categories' text contents at once similar to VisualFileChange such as to adjust navbar templates after a set of category moves (thread)
So this isn't as simple as it may seem and there seems to be a substantial broader problem. I moved the category contents of that category for now and will get to rest of cats soon. There's just too many todos, sorry I haven't done it by now. Prototyperspective (talk) 15:04, 5 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Perfect. Thanks you
And thanks for the information about the technical issues. by the way I found the moved cat because it's linked in articels in German Wikipedia and so I'm trying to fix it. and this cat was linked in many articeles :-) Greetings from Dresden Zthomas19:11, 5 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

I don't mind the reverts; and I did want to explain my edits. The SDC doc explicitly endorses generality and redundancy. The logic makes sense; search isn't able to index the inheritance tree and one hopes a search for a general term like "cat" will return cougars and house cats and kittens. Additionally, "most precise value only" cannot resolve properties/depictions that have different specificity in different contexts.
This isn't meant as a complaint or necessarily even to initiate a discussion. I suspect you are more familiar with these discussions than I am. My understanding is that while following the SDC doc is not required, it is permitted.
Thanks for explaining. I doubt the SDC encourages people to add all the different levels of abstraction of whatis shown such as say 'Building' and 'the specific building shown' instead of just 'the specific building shown'. Or 'human' and 'specific person' instead of just 'specific person'. Often it could be 5+ subjects that all are the same subject but at different levels of abstraction. search isn't able to index the inheritance tree another reason for why SDC is often inferior to simply the categories. But in any case, that would be something to fix elsewhere probably. and one hopes a search for a general term like "cat" will return cougars and house cats and kittens I think users searching for that would expect to see just house cats (including kittens). Prototyperspective (talk) 19:21, 2 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Wow, what a convincing answer. There are many cats with screenshots containing also videos. What solution do you suggest apart from reverting? Anyway, a user looking for screenshots of program X at situation Y will typically be intrested in both static images and videos. If you want to separate videos, use a subcat. The related videos should not be somewhere else far away from cat where the majority of shots of program X at situation Y is located. Taylor 49 (talk) 00:58, 3 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Another solution would be to name categories like Screenshots and screencasts of xyz or Screenshots and screen recordings of xyz.
But that's not a good idea because 1) videos are generally separated from other files which is why all those Videos of xyz categories etc exist 2) Commons:Categories#Selectivity principle.
That many categories contain both screenshots and videos suggests there is some work to be done and one thing that needs to be done is making people aware they shouldn't just categorize further videos into these categories. This query shows 341 video but has incomplete results. Doesn't seem all too bad, these could all be fixed (and should eventually).
Anyway, a user looking for screenshots of program X at situation Y will typically be intrested in both static images and videos I disagree that this would be typically the case: it may often be the case (say 10% of category visitors) so I add the videos category as a see also or alternatively, the videos are located in a parent category the user could navigate to.
If you want to separate videos, use a subcat No, not a subcat but a parallel cat as videos are not screenshots. I hope we don't need policy to explain that films are not paintings and things like that – it's just a fact and category contents should be accurate. somewhere else far away from cat If you spot cases of this, add a {{See also cat}} template. Prototyperspective (talk) 10:36, 3 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) @Taylor 49: I agree with Prototyperspective that a still from a video is not a "screenshot". You say There are many cats with screenshots contining [sic] also videos. If you are just saying that there are some categories that contain both screenshots and videos (or stills from videos), that is perfectly possible, but if there are categories that are specifically supposed to contain screenshots and which contain stills from videos, I'd say the latter are probably miscategorized. Can you give two or three examples of stills from videos that are categorized as screenshots? Jmabel ! talk05:20, 3 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@User:Jmabel: This is not about "stills from videos" but about screen recordings ie videos of progams running or being used.
@User:Prototyperspective: hope we don't need policy to explain that films are not paintings: please don't try to present me like a laughing stock.
Screenshots (static images) and screencasts (videos) serve very same purpose, namely showing a progam running or being used. They should be either in same cat or near each other.
This is not about "stills from videos" but about screen recordings ie videos of progams running or being used. I don't think I've heard anyone in real life call that a "screenshot" either, so much so that I didn't even think of the possibility. - Jmabel ! talk20:10, 3 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I'm not ridiculing you but explaining it. Re renaming the cat: I would object for the two reasons named earlier 1) videos are generally separated from other files which is why all those Videos of xyz categories etc exist 2) Commons:Categories#Selectivity principle. Screenshots (static images) and screencasts (videos) serve very same purpose Their purposes overlap but they aren't the same and additionally purpose of files isn't the only way to organize files. E.g. some users are specifically looking for videos or explanatory videos while some would like to embed just an image for the image property in a Wikidata item. Not everyone uses Commons screenshots categories the same way as you or how you think people are. Again I did not ridicule you, if my argument sounds ridiculous to you then that just underlines the part "clearly false". If there's a friendlier way to phrase it but still make the same point, I'm not aware of how. Prototyperspective (talk) 19:43, 3 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
videos are generally separated from other files which is why all those Videos of xyz categories etc exist Precisely, they do exist as subcats. Category:Videos of Ursus arctos (containing videos) is a subcat of Category:Ursus arctos (containing photos). Please explain what is wrong with applying that principle already videly used on commons to screenshots as well. From what you wrote above you seem to be against everything, against shared cat, and against subcat as well. Should I start searching for other things that are "clearly false" in this perfecty correct commons? Your proposal "policy to explain that films are not paintings" is clearly false, or at least heavily off-topic and bordering on insult. Taylor 49 (talk) 19:50, 3 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Category:Ursus arctos contains not just photos but any kind of media and videos are subcategorized. The principle widely applied on Commons is subcategorizing things that are subordinate to the parent category; subcategorizing videos into a screenshots category would imply screenshots are videos and I just explained that this is not the case and you seemed to agree so much that you accused me of ridiculing you when I gave an example that was supposed to illustrate this with an equivalent/similar case. Should I start searching for other things that are "clearly false" in this perfecty correct commons Would be great if you do so but I'm not asking you to do so – it's just that help would be appreciated. I didn't claim Commons is perfect. Your proposal "policy to explain that films are not paintings" is clearly false, Why are you so offended? Calm down. I was explaining why I don't need to provide a policy that explains why and/or that videos are not screenshots (or a subtype of screenshots). What about this one? No, a map is not a video. These videos show maps – A map is a symbolic depiction of interrelationships, commonly spatial, between things within a space. […] Some maps change interactively. Please start reverting "clearly false" stuff. I did start doing so long ago. Whenever I see something that is false – clearly or unclearly – I fix it. There are many cases. I don't know why you seem to care so much whether videos are in screenshots categories. By the way, another reason for why they shouldn't be there is because people looking for them would not look into that category to search for them and it would remove the videos from cats where they would look for them. Category contents should always be accurate and this is straightforward principle and it's a long-standing important one (even if there miscategorizations here and there which again I try to fix whenever I come across them). Thank you very much for your proposals for improvements to the Commons wishlist. I just read some of them and I really support! I really appreciate your time and effort in contributing to this.
If you don’t mind, I would like to ask for your help to add one more suggestion, as I’m not familiar at all with Phabricator and the Meta pages. The suggestion is to have the possibility to sort categories alphabetically, by creation date, and by size of files, and more, both in ascending and descending order, with just a single tool. Please let me know if you are willing to add this. Thank you again for your support! Sailko (talk) 17:03, 5 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, it's very appreciated. You could create the wish there and I could provide feedback on its talk page and we could then proceed to edit the wish together to improve it as adequate.
Do you mean the sorting of categories on e.g. file pages or the sorting of the search results when searching for categories with MediaSearch or both or the sorting of subcategories on category pages? I wonder what the applications of sorting alphabetically would be. I guess sorting by creation date would enable seeing new likely underpopulated categories which could be useful. And by size of files do you mean total storage space of the files directly in the category or number of files directly in the category or number of files in the category including all (subsub…)subcategories or both or sth else? I think several of these things could be useful so I'd consider adding it if you don't add it but I also have many other ideas & proposals that I haven't yet added and it would probably be better if you added it. I think this could be implemented by some tool that may use a quarry query where you probably can already see this and it would be best if it was added natively as an integrated functionality of MediaSearch (depends on what you mean). What would the main applications be for this/these things? Prototyperspective (talk) 14:43, 6 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hi, thanks for the reply. My idea is about files into categories: when you open a category you can only sort files by alphabetical name and by the "defaultsort" indications, but there is no way to sort them from newest to oldest (which would be useful to separate 20-year-old files from the most recent views of a subject) or by file size (if you are looking for a higher quality file, for example for printing or detailed crops). The inspiration came from Windows folders and their View and Sort by options.
Nevertheless, I have never submitted a wish before, and the one time I tried using Phabricator it did not go well, so I'm asking if you have the chance to add a new one, as you did in the past. I will leave you my idea in case you like it. Thank you. Cheers --Sailko (talk) 21:28, 6 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) Sorting by date taken would be very difficult (how do you compare a precise date in 1894 to "between 1890 and 1914" to "19th century", to "no date", etc.?). Sorting by date uploaded is probably doable; even there we'd have to decide first upload or latest upload if there is more than one version. - Jmabel ! talk18:30, 7 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Sorting by date taken would be very difficult … You're talking not about sorting by date taken but about sorting by date taken with 100% accuracy in all cases. However, this sorting would already be useful if it worked for most cases and most files. how do you compare a precise date in 1894 to "between 1890 and 1914" to "19th century", to "no date", etc.? things like "between 1890 and 1914" are very rare and these could get excluded in the results with if possible a note at top showing the number of excluded files. files with broad dates like 19th century could be sorted as if it was 1900, ideally with a note underneath these files' titles.
You make a good point though. This has caveats and could be quite difficult to implement with good precision. Nevertheless, it would be very useful also if it doesn't work perfectly and if there are some searches & cats where this wouldn't work well at all. One application would be for populating a date-specific category – one could then maybe put 9x% of files into the category that belong into it and then work on the later identified remainder which have e.g. no or a very unspecific date.
Sorting by date uploaded is probably doable It's already implemented via the recency sorting. I think it sorts by the date of the first version – changing it to the date of the latest version if it's not a revert to the first version may usually be better. Prototyperspective (talk) 22:53, 8 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
when you open a category you can only sort files by alphabetical name and by the "defaultsort" indications, but there is no way to sort them from newest to oldest That is not true. You can sort by from newest to oldest uploaded. However, for that you need to know and use the incategory and deepcategory search operators. Wish m:Community Wishlist/W397 is about a main blocker to making this more widely accessible. One can use Help:Gadget-DeepcatSearch to open the deepcategory (files in the category or any level of subcategories) view with a click where one can use that sorting but it doesn't have incategory and it doesn't work well for large categories. or by file size For file-size one can only select between Small Medium or Large or specify a certain minimum or maximum file-size but one can't sort by it. the one time I tried using Phabricator it did not go well No reason to not try again; just try to explain what functionality you'd like to have clearly and take into account the info I just explained. If I do make a wish relating to a variant of parts of what you said, I could link to your code issue there. Prototyperspective (talk) 23:18, 8 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

No, people can and do mark data graphics that are intended to show data of a specific year. Usually, files that are used are intended to show the latest data. Lots of charts & maps are also updated by their original authors. If there were two or multiple maps of this type, all but one would stay the same but one of them would get continuously updated. If you'd like, I could add the template that this map is intended to show the latest data but that's afaik the default. Prototyperspective (talk) 19:43, 5 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello Prototyperspective,
Last October, you renamed several categories, replacing "diagram" with "graph", often with the explanation "none of these is a diagram; all of them are charts/graphs". I don't understand this reasoning because, in my view, a graph is just one of several types of diagrams, meaning every graph is automatically also a diagram ("You could think of diagrams as the super-category: Anything that visualises information in an abstract way is a diagram."). Furthermore, the implementation seems neither complete nor consistent to me:
Is there a reason for these discrepancies that I'm missing? Has this been discussed elsewhere? I consider this inconsistency to be very problematic. Buffty (talk) 22:41, 9 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hello, graphs are a subtype of charts. First of all please take a look at the files in Category:Software diagrams and then the files in Category:Free software charts – these are obviously two very different types of files regardless of how they're named and it's needed and useful that these two types are separated/distinguished. There have been discussions about this, incl here and many sources support the distinction also when it comes to these two names, e.g. diagrams defined as simplified illustrations that explain ideas, structures, and processes. They also show how parts work together and how things relate.[2] or diagram defined here a simple plan that represents a machine, system, or idea, etc., often drawn to explain how it works[3] etc. Note that Commons cat titles are in English and things vary a bit in other languages but there's no need for Commons to lump very different things together. You're right though about the category – the renaming wasn't completed and there is now some navigation issue.
I intend to complete it and the reason I haven't is because there's so many of these categories and I was first asking about whether there is a tool to rename many categories at once instead of having to manually go through them one by one. In the midst of the process I became aware of the issue with the navigation between the categories, I'll work on completing it soon. I know about the Category:Climate diagrams cat and the pendant to it is Category:Climate change charts; there are still quite a few charts in there because it contains so many files. Graphs again are a subtype of charts so usually it makes more sense to put "charts" in the category name without making things too narrow and overspecific. Thanks for asking; again I'll work on fixing the issue with the temperature charts cats. Prototyperspective (talk) 00:22, 15 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi!
First of all, thank you for uploading :D. I saw that this file was uploaded in Full-HD, although a 4K version is available. Did you upload it with Video2Commons? It seems to ignore the best quality version... :(. Regards --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 17:10, 23 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I've uploaded it with video2commons and the file should also have the associated meta-category saying so. Looks like video2commons still or again has a problem of importing media below source – I didn't know the file was imported below quality at source; see Commons talk:Video2commons and/or more specifically m:Community Wishlist/W447 which requests this problem to be fixed. Thanks for noticing and notifying. Prototyperspective (talk) 17:20, 23 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
It was a mistake – thanks for letting me know...I thought the City cat was about the general concept and a Cities subcat about individual cities but it looks like I remembered the category title/contents falsely. Undone, thanks. Prototyperspective (talk) 18:02, 25 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
AI-generated erotic art & 2020s erotic art categories

Wanted to reach out as my edit that removed 2020s erotic art category from Ai generated erotic art was reverted. Ai generated images are best to be kept in their respective categories. Same for Individual Ai generated images. I appreciate your help on commons. take care DNocterum (talk) 08:06, 25 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes, please don't remove that category and other categories like it. Subject in art categories are useful to for example separate such images from photos. Your revert was unexplained. Please do not edit-war. Prototyperspective (talk) 18:04, 25 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
my apologies for not explaining myself. Yeah it seems liek we need a subcategory, like you said in the other reply. At the time that i edited that, it seemed the best optio nat the time, but i understand what you mean. let me know how i can help. And I'll leave it as is. If we're able to get subcategories that separate ai generated images and non-ai images, that will probably make categorizing easier. my intent was not to cause discord or conflict. DNocterum (talk) 01:51, 6 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for clarifying. Yes, more subcategories for AI images can be useful but in most or many cases, they're already subcategorized and generally it's probably best to only subcategorize only if there's more than 2 files. One can already filter out AI images via the deepcategory search operator in any category so it may not be as needed or useful as one may think. Currently, one has to do it somewhat manually by attaching -deepcategory:"AI-generated images" to a search. The search can also be used to show all files directly in a category or in a category and its subcategories. Prototyperspective (talk) 13:42, 21 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

You made this edit but I disagree with you. This svg file is created by me and not by "Blausen Medical Communications". This svg is an illustration based on an image from them, but they didn't create this svg so please remove that category, thanks. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 13:47, 26 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Great, thank you! It would be best if you also added a meta (help) page about the gadget on Commons. And it looks like sth that could be quite useful also for other categories where the docs would explain where this would be more useful than using a deepcategory search query + cat-a-lot.
one would have to do this for hundreds of countries……and then repeat it after each and every mass upload. This is why so far I see no reason for why what I asked about earlier (here and in the archived thread on your talk page linked from it) – setting the correct cats at time of upload where it works best – would be solved by this but reason to re-emphasize that. For example, there one could specify 'Energy statistics' (or Energy statistics by country) and it would automatically subcategorize the respective files into the respective subcats of Category:Energy statistics by country based on which country the file is about (BLR=Belarus) – and here it's having both the topic and the country in the cat, not just the country as with Category:Charts of Belarus which his suboptimal. Again, this is best done at time of upload not via cleanups after the fact because there the tool can dynamically make use of the which country metadata instead of having to enter each country manually (and this also applies to the years data).
I don't know why but the tool isn't showing anymore at User:Mr. Ibrahem/sandbox2 but I guess it's supposed to be used via the Tools dropdown anyway instead of on any page with that contains a div with that css class. So when it comes to adding to national categories, what's needed for it is for the tool to know the abbreviations and to subcategorize accordingly so if either [[:Category:Energy statistics of <country>]] or Category:Energy statistics by country is specified (don't know which would be better) then, the tool would subcategorize into the respective country subcategories where it knows that …SWE.svg means the cat would be the …of Sweden cat. Don't know if there's an issue tracker for this tool but this would be good to add to it. Prototyperspective (talk) 14:35, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi,
I would like to ask about how to add support to any topic on challenge suggestion topic page. Pls guide on this as, I am beginner in this field. Girlmath (talk) 10:32, 15 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi, sure – good to see you found your way there as a beginner. To add support for a challenge on the suggestion page,
click the button "edit" next to the header of a challenge; alternatively you can click the first "reply" button in that section.
Then enter {{s}} comment ~~~~
Replace comment with your comment that briefly explains why you support it. This is not needed so you could also just put {{s}} ~~~~ there. ~~~~ is your username signature and needs to be included. You can also replace {{s}} with {{o}} if you oppose a suggested challenge theme.
If you clicked on "edit" click the blue button "Publish changes", If you clicked the "reply" button, click the blue "reply" button.
Good question, one could start a CfD about whether the cats should be merged or stay as is or one of them be renamed. For now, I've moved 4 of the files in the Videos made… cat to the subcat so now this cat is just about the technical criteria of whether it's a video from inside the train where the subcat is for videos that are genuinely show the outside environment at good quality instead of fast-moving things outside moving past some reflecting window that may depict more the inside experience than the outside environment. Prototyperspective (talk) 13:07, 17 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
After some of our modifications on this file, two categories might now be redundant – the category "Videos of the Moon" which is also a subcategory of the "Category:Videos of astronomy". Can we remove "Videos of astronomy" which is above in the category tree ?
Sure, good point – removed it. However, this useful file is not just a random video of the Moon like many of the other videos there but explaining astronomical mechanics basically and thus should probably also be in another subcategory of Videos of astronomy. I checked and Category:Videos of celestial mechanics looks about right. Do you think it fits? I've also added Category:Videos of astronomical diagrams (but that category is quite empty so maybe I'll start a category discussion). Prototyperspective (talk) 22:29, 17 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi. You added a switch to this template last year, but the first usage of it (printing either AI-generated image or image upscaled with AI based on whether upscaled= is set) isn't working and I can't work out why. Both versions of the template say image upscaled with AI. The second usage, omitting the small print, works as it should.
{{Bad AI}} currently renders as:
This image upscaled with AI contains obvious artifacts. It might therefore qualify for deletion if an identical image of better quality is provided.
@Tvpuppy: Thanks, good catch, I hadn't noticed the later edit affecting it. How does a template get marked for translation? The translation stuff has always been a mystery to me. Belbury (talk) 12:05, 19 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

You requested, quite rightly, speedy deletion (CSD F10) of this file. Since then, I have retouched it, to remove a superimposed watermark/lettering/advertisement. Now, I recommend to keep it, please, because it has some artistic effects. I removed your RfD, because of a technical anomality, which might have been caused by uploading a different version. NearEMPTiness (talk) 03:40, 20 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) @NearEMPTiness: you can always turn someone else's speedy deletion request into a normal DR, but unless you are dealing with outright vandalism you really shouldn't just remove it. I'm sure that now that you've informed him this one will work out, but please don't do it that way in the future. - Jmabel ! talk07:37, 20 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
After I had overwritten the file, I pressed the button but got an error message that the name of the user requesting the deletion could not be found. The obvious solution would be first to press the button and then to upload the improved file. --NearEMPTiness (talk) 08:00, 20 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Note that I CSD-tagged the file not only because of the watermark but also because of the small size – why would somebody upload a photo with that small size if it's not a copyvio, oftentimes small-sized images are copyvios. Thanks for your image editing. Prototyperspective (talk) 09:45, 20 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Heythere, can not find an entry for [5]. In my opinion there is not such a link, because the rename windowsprocess does not fit on a small maobile site. What do you think? Regards, Conny (talk) 19:57, 26 February 2026 (UTC).Reply
Maybe then the issue scope is that one mobile one can't move/rename files. Generally, wiki functionalities / sites are responsive so they also display / work when on mobile. Thanks for asking. Prototyperspective (talk) 20:02, 26 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, that would also make sense to me, if we want to limit the categorization. Not sure how to implement it though, given that there are so many files. Anything you can implement? Either way, categorizing the mentioned image as weight training equipment is infactual. Best, /Urbourbo (talk) 15:20, 5 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good. A category for discussion debate seems like the right move here to avoid future back-and-forth changes. The main phrase used on enwp is "strength training", but I'm thinking "strength" can be a bit ambiguous so my vote would be with your choice of "resistance training". Btw in the meantime, would agree to leave the file mentioned above in the parent category for now? Thanks, /Urbourbo (talk) 17:19, 5 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi I see you created this category and move videos I have made to it. Those videos were not created using a dash cam, they were filmed using a DLSR camera(Pentax K1) on a tripode inside the car for the earlier ones. For the more recent one it wasnt a dash cam either these were done by building a mount on the roof of my car for a weather proof camera. A couple of early ones using this camera were connected to a spot light mount on the front of the car while it proved the concept and mount design it produced results that are bit too low. Sorry I have reverted your efforts as they werent created using dash cameras Gnangarra10:55, 20 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
The category are just videos I made, each are in content related categories. Again these arent Automibile cameras, some just happen to use a vehicle the platfom to move them through time & space just like a dolly would only bigger faster and capable to go on public roads. I replied there, yeah its definitely an area thats in search of clarity given the technology changes. For all of that there is one thing that I missed to point out that is the category Videos by Gnangarra is just a user category and a subset of Photographs by Gnangarra category where I collate everything I have uploaded for the last 20 years. Please, if you want to Special:Diff/1189193887 propose speedy deletion of a category where there is already a CfD, propose it in the CfD, not on the category page. Having both, separately, at the same time is kind of a mess. - Jmabel ! talk18:05, 30 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I've explained to the CfD starter in another nomination in the set of CfDs they made that empty cats should be speedily deleted instead of being added to the large backlog of CfDs. I don't see how it's a mess and disagree. This is needed and good to close open CfDs. Prototyperspective (talk) 18:07, 30 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I really recommend that in that case, use {{Vsd}} on the CfD. In my experience, the way you are doing it makes it much less likely to be sorted out quickly. - Jmabel ! talk02:56, 31 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
In my experience adding {{Vsd}} to CfDs will make it take very long until the CfD is sorted out while adding the proper speedy tag to the category gets the case closed quickly. I also informed the users that instead of creating CfDs and cluttering and flooding the backlogs they should just speedy-tag such cats. Cases included categories with titles that have typos. You could raise this in the VP discussion about open CfDs if you'd like to. I found many of the CfDs of the past 3 months were about empty categories so I could close a substantial number this way. Prototyperspective (talk) 11:07, 31 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
If you are really sure that the category will never be used (certainly the case for misspelling), you could close the CfD as a clear consensus and then mark the category for speedy deletion, but when both are open at once, it makes a mess. In particular, it's likely that the category gets deleted but no one ever gets around to closing the CfD and it sits there as an orphan. - Jmabel ! talk18:36, 31 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I like to stay out of the business of closing discussion and leave that to admins as well as exceptional contributors often routinely closing CfDs. I don't see how it causes a mess – you described one way for that so let me address that: people go over the CfDs to close these and if the category page is a redlink that makes it easy to close. You can see with the cats that I tagged for speedy deletion how fast these cases have been solved and they were in the CfDs for weeks, in some cases for months. Moreover, users are not subscribed or watching individual CfD pages so calling for speedy deletion there has no immediate effect. I could try {{Vsd}} for the next cases I come across but I don't see how it's better; it could be if there was a way to see / track which CfDs have that template. Maybe that's implementable but then closers would still need to use this to find and close speedily-closable CfDs. Prototyperspective (talk) 22:46, 31 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Prototyperspective: would you consider undeleting the image? As MarcoSwart stated: ... Keep. Dutch Wiktionary is using this picture to illustrate an abstract concept. An image that is understandable, but clearly not realistic, is helpful to indicate the abstractness. I would support the development of guidelines to use new technologies properly, but a blanket prohibition seems counterproductive... Thank you so much for your time. 2024 Picture of the Year:Mundari man polishing the horns of one of his Watusi cows using a mixture of cow urine and ash as a ritualistic and protective practice in a temporary cattle camp in Terekeka, South Sudan.
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2025 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year is the twentieth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favourite images featured on Commons during the last year (2025) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just five images to become the Picture of the Year.
I cancelled the SD. I tagged it because it doesn't just look fishy bad but also was uploaded by a small unofficial youtube channel with few views – why couldn't you take it from some official site? Prototyperspective (talk) 20:51, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I do not believe the idents have been uploaded officially yet, which is why I got them from YouTube. In any case I consider them to be AI slop. Nylix4488 (talk) 21:30, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi everyone,
Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.
Here are your top three winning images:
First place: The aftermath of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on October 9, 2023, leaving widespread destruction in the Rimal area. Attribution: WAFA (Q2915969) / CC-BY-SA 3.0
Second place: Baby cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) sleeping at Cape cross, Namibia. Attribution: Giles Laurent / CC-BY-SA 4.0
Third place: A gigantic jet photographed from the International Space Station by astronaut Nichole Ayers. Attribution: public domain
You can view the full results and see where all your favorite images placed here: Full 2025 Results
I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.
Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!
